Katy Perry visits Madagascar, March 2013

Internationally acclaimed American singer/songwriter and UNICEF supporter Katy Perry visited UNICEF programs in nutrition, education and child protection in March of 2013. Her visit was intended to focus attention on the situation of children in the country – one of the poorest in the world that is still recovering from a political crisis and ensuing.

Madagascar has the sixth highest chronic malnutrition rate in the world. One in two children are suffering from the condition – which means 1.5 million children are affected, resulting on both their physical and mental development being impaired.

The solution to chronic malnutrition is not expensive, but it requires critical timing. UNICEF Madagascar has made this fight a priority, and together with partners is working with 6,500 health centres throughout the country to educate pregnant mothers on nutrition, as well as assisting breastfeeding mothers and children up to 2 years of age in eating a balanced diet.
