SOUTH AFRICA

Zimbabwe's Refugees

Mercy Mehlomakulu, at teacher who has come from Zimbabwe in search of work and who has recently requalified in South Africa stands with her one year old son in the room they share with 14 other families in the Methodist Mission, Johannesburg, South Africa on the 3rd June, 2009.

A woman, who has just migrated to South Africa from Zimbabwe in search of work and food, tries to get some sleep at the bottom of a staircase with her baby, at the Methodist Mission in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa on the 3rd June, 2009. Over 2000 refugees from Zimbabwe sleep in the mission every night, and despite reports that the situation is improving in Zimbabwe, more continue to arrive every week.

Kate, I only discovered your site yesterday via a Facebook member from South Africa Shem Compion who is a photographer with great talent as you have. I lived in South Africa Mpumalanga area for 24 years before returning back to my roots in early 1995 Switzerland the reason I am very touched by the pictures you posted and understand. It hurts me in the deapest of my heart to see what is happening to Zimbabwe a country I visited many times and loved as my own. I just can't understand that the rest of the world is not helping to stop the corruption in Southern Africa ??? Thank you for sharing your experiences.... I sure will be back :>)
