Kenya - The elderly struggle

Still on assignment with Helpage International, I travelled out to the west of the Kenya, near Kisumu. Here, thousands of families have been affected by HIV. Grandparents are now the sole carers of their grandchildren, orphaned as a result of their parents dying from HIV. Yet the grandparents have no means of income, or ability to support these children and the government gives them no assistance. This elderly woman has three grandchildren dependent on her. When I visited them, the two youngest hadn't eaten for three days and neither had she. The neighbours don't assist, fearing this old woman because her husband died of Aids, along with three of her children. The children had barely any clothes, were malnourished, and suffering from numerous infections. Their grandmother was helpless - "I can no longer work like I used to, " she told me "My body is weak and I just don't know what to do." We bought some bread for the children - it was the first time they had ever eaten bread according to their grandmother - being used to a diet of millet and maize when she could afford it.

UGANDA - The Virus Spreads

I have recently returned from an assignment in Eastern Uganda, photographing for Helpage International.
In some areas where they have programmes, entire villages have been infected with HIV. This woman's husband has recently died from AIDS; herself and her entire family, pictured behind her, are infected with the virus. Some have started to take ARV's, but she says that their biggest problem is finding enough food to eat with their treatment each day. Thousands of people throughout Uganda and Kenya face a similar problem. Governements are now able to provide ARV's free, but there is no consistent policy to providing food with the treatment, without which it will not work.
