I have recently returned from an assignment in Eastern Uganda, photographing for Helpage International.
In some areas where they have programmes, entire villages have been infected with HIV. This woman's husband has recently died from AIDS; herself and her entire family, pictured behind her, are infected with the virus. Some have started to take ARV's, but she says that their biggest problem is finding enough food to eat with their treatment each day. Thousands of people throughout Uganda and Kenya face a similar problem. Governements are now able to provide ARV's free, but there is no consistent policy to providing food with the treatment, without which it will not work.
