Ambulance Rescues in Nairobi
While in Nairobi, sorting out my next assignments, I have been working on a project with Nairobi's ambulance crews. There are only 5 ambulances in Nairobi, for use by the public and these are funded by St John's Ambulance and Johanniter International.
The traffic in Nairobi is a huge hinderance to their work, many drivers do not understand the urgency of an ambulance, or what to do when they hear a siren.
The areas the ambulances are called to are often extremely dangerous, being in some of the most run down areas of town.
In these places I am very aware of how little of Nairobi I really know, or that such urban poverty existed here. I have realised that I have never done an assignment in "urban Africa". The majority of NGO's who I work for concentrate on assistance to rural districts, yet 2006 marked the year that the majority of the worlds population migrated from being rural to urban.

Actually, Kate, you left out the Nairobi City Council ambulance which also provides service to the general public, but the number of units they can put on the road is usually only one or two more than you specified...

Kate, you might be interested to know that Richard Inwang who appears in this photo, was killed yesterday morning in an ambulance collision along with another Nairobi EMT and several more were injured seriously.

I am very sorry to hear about Richard Inwang and would very much like to contact you.
I have been searching the internet for you without success.
And if anyone else reading this knows of John please could you forward any contact details or perhaps tell him of my search.
Yours ever, Kate Holt.
